You have been told that your morning coffee and evening high-intensity workout will make you smart and will prove you a disciplined woman. But as a yoga teacher, I have seen a different story on your skin. I have seen your cortisol face, puffiness, receding jawline, and the tension in your brow. No expensive cream in the world can fix it. You are not lazy, you are just in survival mode. And today, we are going to cut it out.
Let’s have a discussion on 10 Normal Habits Straining Your Nervous System.
Habit 1
As soon as you wake up, you sit down for a cup of coffee. Between 6 and 10 o’clock, our body releases its own energy shot of cortisol. When you suddenly stack caffeine on it, the natural peak gets disturbed. You reach a hyper-stressed state, which causes a mid-morning crash. That is, by noon, your body starts crashing completely.
Basically, we have some states of waking up. There are different stages, alpha, beta, etc. And when we disrupt that process, our bodies naturally crash by noon. I have a simple rule: delay the first cup by 90 minutes. Push as much as you can, move your morning coffee or tea back. Let your breathing be your first stimulant. Wake up in the morning and focus on deep breathing instead of coffee.
Habit 2
We breathe through our mouths. Most women breathe through their mouths while working; they don’t even know about it. There is a small result in face yoga, which is also called the adenoid phase. In this, our tongue does not support the mouth. It stays down. Because of this, we start to see changes in our jaws and eyes over time. There is only one way to get rid of all this. Focus on breathing through your nose instead of your mouth.
Habit 3
Many of us keep our stomachs tight because we want to look thin. We don’t want our blotting to go out of our clothes. But this is dangerous in the long run. Because this disturbs the natural diaphragmatic breathing of our body. You always stay in flight or fight mode, that is, in sympathetic mode. You don’t let the parasympathetic mode activate. Whenever I practice in my classes, I always focus on belly breathing. My goal is that my students should do belly breathing. When your belly is soft, it regulates your nervous system well.
Habit 4
Many of us think that exercise is important. In the name of exercise, we overtrain our bodies. Especially high-intensity exercises. If you are already stressed, then high-intensity exercises will not work for you. It will work as a physiological stressor. It will chronically elevate your cortisol state. It will encourage a protective fat in your body. This protective fat accumulates around your abdomen. When you know that you are already in stress mode, instead of high-intensity exercises, you should go for restorative exercises. That helps calm your nervous system. Like yoga. Because it is very important to heal your endocrine system first.
Habit 5
We know that carbohydrates give us instant energy. But it is not a good habit to rely on refined carbs for quick energy. It increases our blood sugar like a roller coaster. It creates anxiety symptoms. Like heart palpitations and irritability. To nourish our adrenals, instead of refined carbs, we can switch to natural complex carbs. Like sweet potato.
Habit 6
Nowadays, we notice that we don’t want to get bored even for a second. We want to fill the gap. To fill the gap, we use our phones. For example, we have to heat water in the kitchen. Or we are stuck in a traffic jam. To fill that gap, we prefer to have a phone. And we start scrolling. We don’t allow our brain to reach the default mode network. Default mode network or DMN is a part of our brain. Or you can call it a function. Where there is creativity and emotional processing. Constant stimulation always keeps us in micro alert mode. It is better to find activities where you don’t have to use your phone. And you can increase your creativity
Habit 7
Planning, making a to-do list, and time blocking are good things. But it is very dangerous to rely on them too much. Many people do hyperscheduling. They want to note every minute. This is also a type of trauma. Where we don’t want to control ourselves every second. It blocks your feminine flow. This is very important for regulation. What will be true resilience? Keep your promises to yourself. But leave some room for flexibility. For spontaneity. Because life happens. You don’t know what will happen. Keeping yourself rigid is not a good thing.
Habit 8
Keeping everything open in your mental tab is actually a factor that leads to stress. It works like back-to-back tabs in your phone. This is called the zygonic effect. Some of our tasks remain open in our minds until they finish. And we start getting anxiety because of it. So a better idea is this. Note down all your tasks. Assign them the time. And just in case it doesn’t happen. It’s okay. You can keep it for next time. But don’t keep it open in your mind like a tab.
Habit 9
I have already talked about this. We try to make people happy 24×7. And we always keep ourselves in tension. We don’t want others to get worried. It’s good to take care of others. But torturing yourself is really bad.
Habit 10
Taking help from others is not a small thing. If you feel that you can reduce stress by seeking help from others. Take help. Healing your nervous system is the ultimate beauty ritual. Inhale for 4 seconds. Exhale for 6 seconds. And tell yourself. I am safe. I can let it go.
